PS3 2.40 Firmware Update is BORKEN!!11

Looks like Sony programmers made a little boo-boo with their much coveted PS3 firmware update. Some PS3 users of various versions of the unit have been reporting un-bootable PS3’s with the only solution being formatting the hard drive – losing all downloads and save data.

The 2.40 Firmware update was supposed to add Xbox Live standard functions much coveted features like in-game XMB (xross media bar) and Achievements Trophy support for a limited amount of games.

Plagiarism aside, this would have made the PS3 features a little closer to be on-par with Xbox Live’s superior online features. The main setbacks would be the current library has little support for these features. The list of games that will fully support these features at this publication is around 6 or 7. A promise of games being update-able to include these features will pretty much be non-existent really, given how publishers automatically forget their games if its not flying off the shelves anymore. So early adopters, (and MGS4 players) Sony says screw you. Let’s hope Sony makes it mandatory to include all the features on future games.

In comparison, Microsoft has been rolling out stable updates to its Xbox 360 dashboard – with updates even more feature-rich than before.

I predict a delay on a fixed firmware update to be released sometime within 2-3 weeks. As for the unfortunate few who have had their PS3’s borked, you might be screwed. Sony might allow for a certain backup procedure for your games, but it will still be pretty ugly and should have been completely unnecessary. Its fortunate that we haven’t yet set-up the 80Gb MGS4 PS3 bundle here.

So will Sony can has programming? Will Sony can has teh interwebs? Maybe.
